How to Measure Windows for Blinds

The measurement when installing blinds on windows is crucial to make sure that the blinds fit in the window sill. Even one-half inch off in measurement can mean the difference in whether or not the blinds fit in the frame. Accuracy in reading a tape measure is highly recommended when preparing to install blinds.

  1. First: Measure

Using a measuring tape, measure the top of the window pane on the inside. It is best to measure it so that the measuring tape is flat against the window, to ensure that you are getting an accurate reading. After recording the first measurement, measure the window from top to bottom. This measurement does not matter unless you are considering vertical blinds.

  2. Second: Buy

Buy the blinds, either at a home improvement or retail store. Blinds are fairly inexpensive; however, some windows require custom blinds. If you must order custom blinds, go back and recheck that the measurements are accurate. Most blind manufacturers do not allow for a return on custom ordered blinds.

  3. Third: Check

Before installing the brackets for the blinds to hang on, take the rod out of the box, and make sure that it fits inside the window frame.

  4. Fourth: Mark

Mark with a pencil on the top of the window sill where you intend to install the blinds. Use a level to make sure that the brackets for the blinds are level, and drill them into place. Slide the bar into the sides of the bracket, and double check to make sure that the blinds are level.
