How to Make Window Blinds

Making your own window blinds is significantly less expensive than purchasing custom blinds new. Make Roman shades from the material of your choice with little or no sewing, and cut exactly the right size for each of your windows. Read this article to learn how to make your own window blinds.
First: Cut material to size
After selecting material for your window shade, measure your window and cut it to size. Cut the material two inches longer and two inches wider than the window to leave a seam allowance. Remember that the heavier a material is the less light can get through it.
Second: Seam the edges
Fold the one inch seam allowance under on the right and left sides and secure it. You can either stitch the seams down, or press them with fuse tape. If using hem tape, follow the manufacturers instructions to insure a seam that holds long term.
Third: Create dowel pockets
Start at the bottom edge and fold a pocket around the first dowel rod. Sew the pocket closed. Move two inches up the fabric and create a second pocket around a second dowel rod. Continue up the length of the fabric.
Fourth: Finish the shade
Sew a header board across the top and place ring tape down one side. Run cording through the ring tape so that you can pull the shade up or let it down. Remember that the rings must line up with the dowel rod pockets perfectly. Hang the blind from the ceiling inside the window casing.
